Multi Colored Moonrise
Multi Colored Moonrise
My favorite spot to photograph the Twin Towers was from a pier in Jersey City, New Jersey. I found that only once a year would a full moon rise right between the Towers from that spot. It took me 4 years of trying before I finally succeeded in capturing this photo. This wasn’t actually a full moon that night. In fact, there was a total lunar eclipse (a true full moon) only the night before (March 23, 1997). Because of the rotation of the Earth, the moon appears to move one lunar diameter in exactly 2 minutes, so for this photo I exposed the moon exactly every 60 seconds through red, then green, then red, then blue, then red, then green, etc. filters for this unusual effect. I had 3 cameras working this night, including a pair 30 feet apart that shot the entire scene in “hyperstereo” (3-D). This picture was cropped horizontally for the cover of Astronomy Magazine’s 1999 Astronomy Calendar.
