Star Trail photography is by far the easiest of all astrophotography. Set up a camera on a tripod, leave the camera lens open all night, and wake up to shut it before dawn. At least that’s the way it was in the old days with film. Now with digital cameras you can be much more creative. Gone are the days when you had to calculate how “open” the lens had to be for a certain sky and a specific length of time. Now you simply take a number of “short” exposures (say 2 minutes each) and stitch them together in Photoshop to create the streaking effect. The amazing thing about this type of photography is that you can now shoot when there are lights on around in the neighborhood, and even under a full moon, without blowing the whole shot out ! Plus you have instant test results, which you can check before letting the camera run all night. With the right equipment, this couldn’t be much easier. The sky’s the limit !
