The glow on the horizon is known as the “zodiacal light”, something that can only be seen from very dark sites usually in winter evenings and fall mornings. It’s the result of dust particles orbiting in the plane of the sun, scattered by some of the sun’s light. This photo was taken in May during a “public observing session” at the McDonald Observatory in Ft. Davis, Texas.
